While procedurally generated landscapes do tend to have a more generic, or 'samey' look about them than hand-crafted landscapes, the trade offs in development time can more than make up for a small loss of visual quality and interest. Using regions, a mod developer can circumvent the tedious and time-consuming task of hand-placing each object in the wilderness and focus his or her energies on more important tasks like quest design and the creation of custom assets.
